Settlers were first attracted to this area by all the farmland and the creeks for water mills. Including one mill still standing, now called Vanstone’s Mill at the corner of King Street and Scugog Street. The lands were first purchased by John Burk who later sold it to Lewis Lewis. Lewis had opened the first store which was called Darlington Mills. The store was then purchased by Charles Bowman around 1824. Charles Bowman then established the first post office. Bowmanville has since become a commuter community as most of the residents work out of the city and return to rest and play. Bowmanville is full of history with historic homes and downtown it has become a town, a city with tradition and family at heart. With fabulous festivals year round, The Mosport International Raceway, The Total Hockey Museum, and the largest private zoo in Canada, The Bowmanville Zoo. Bowmanville has become a home for many near and far. Population is approximately 33,000 and growing.
